PORTION DISTORTION

Have you noticed how our portions have increased over the past few years?

What we consider to be a normal portion today is actually 1/3 to 1/2 larger than the portion size was 10 years ago!

Just think about muffins - 10 years ago we made cup cakes - remember those small cakes in patty cases?  Now in their place we have muffins - giant sized cakes at least 2-3 times larger than those small cup cakes.

Not only has the size increased-of course the calories have as well!  From around 100 calories for the cup cake to a whopping 430 calories for a large muffin (that's actually 4 times the calories!!)

It's not only cup cakes that have grown.  Just about every processed food item has increased in size.  Think cups of coffee, glasses of wine (remember the  old what now seem tiny wine glasses?) even sandwiches and salad bars seem to sell large sized serves.

With so many opportunities to increase calorie intake, even when trying to make healthy choices, it is no wonder we as a nation are struggling with our weight.

Think about your serve sizes - try to choose the smallest option, not the largest.  Use smaller sized wine glasses, down size your bowls and plates at home.

Most of all choose unprocessed foods - apples, oranges and vegetables haven't grown larger!! Home made salads and meals can be served in a size you decide - not someone else!

It is amazing how many calories you can save each day just by downsizing.
